NXT TakeOver: War Games

Grab yourself a nice Builder’s Tea and have a seat on the divan while we bask in “The Afterglow” of an absolutely fantastic show.  Shall we?  Let’s…

Kassius Ohno vs. Lars Sullivan

This is what you think it would be.  Angry big dude takes out Kassius. That’s it, really.  It had little going for it to begin with.  Ohno tried to tell the “I’ve thrown everything I can at this guy but he won’t die” story but it only partially worked.  It happened and I watched it.  That’s about all I can say for it.  I’m not giving up on Lars yet but he didn’t show me anything tonight that he hadn’t already shown me before.  He only shows “angry big dude” and he’ll need more to BE more.  Kassius has shown me nothing since he got back to NXT.  He’s essentially just “some guy”.  I wasn’t involved in this at all and the outcome meant nothing.

Velveteen Dream vs. Alistair Black

This is the best NXT match I’ve seen in ages.  It had great story, it had incredible work, and it had crowd engagement from start to finish.  It gets no better.  The match began with great ground work involving Velveteen Dream’s arm and shoulder and both were brilliant doing it.  The story was there too!  The way Velveteen Dream echoed Alistair’s cross-legged sitting routine was just amazing. Then, Alistair echoed Velveteen’s ring slither.  The psychology was perfection.  VD’s stock has to go WAAAAY up after this match. Alistair’s too.

And yes.  Black did say Velveteen Dream’s name.  The way he gave into it was just perfect.  There’s no way to ask more of a match than they gave us.  I’m thrilled for both of them.

Peyton Royce, Ember Moon, Nikki Cross, & Kairi Sane Fatal 4-way for the NXT Women’s Title

These ladies left it all out there!  The powerbomb from Ember Moon to Nikki was crucial!!  Then, there was Peyton’s Rope Tarantula!  Great stuff!  We also got a triple top-rope suplex!  These are the ingredients of a match that will wear everyone involved out…including the audience!  The double-eclipse on Cross and Peyton was a beautiful way to close out the match.  I also love the outcome!  The moment between Asuka and Moon was really cool too.

Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Andrade Cien Almas (w/ Zelina Vega)

I did enjoy how Drew kept telling the story of the injured arm.  Many start telling it and forget about it after a while.  Drew never did and it legitimized the story.  Almas’ tornado inverted DDT was VERY nice!  McIntyre’s inverted Alabama slam was too!  The crowd wasn’t there like they should have been but they did all they could.  Zelina’s spike-rana was beautiful told the story of who’s REALLY in control here.  The outcome was completely bizarre.  For all the nice things in this match, the ending DDT was really awful-looking.  Our friend, “Dave”, let me know his head didn’t hit (I missed the impact) but if it had, it would have been very ugly.  “Sir Mitch” believes he suffered a stinger and he may very well have.  I just hope he comes out okay.

Yet, after all of this, it oddly felt like a cool-down of sorts. I wasn’t into it the whole time, though I tried to be. Andrade ended up with the title and I didn’t really feel one way or the other about it. I only know Zelina will now be impossible to deal with and that’ll be fun.

Make no mistake: this is Zelina’s victory more than Andrade’s. She made this work. It’s all her.

War Games: Undisputed Era, SAniTY, the Authors of Pain & Roderick Strong

This was a VERY good match but it only REALLY caught fire when the AOP got into the rings.  They really made use of both of the rings in a way that no one else had until they showed up.  The twin Trees of Woe was just great to see!  Did Killian actually swallow the key to the cage?  I think I saw him playing with it in his mouth so I doubt it but it was a great visual!

All of these guys laid it ALL out there.  It would have been physically impossible for them to have worked harder.  This match had the crowd in the palm of its hand.  The chaos in this match was just intoxicating.  It was hard to keep up with it all, really. The twin Towers of Doom were just a thing of beauty and that Adam Cole should shine like a beacon in the middle of it was just perfection!

Wolfe caught damage during the table spot but that’s to be expected.  Strong’s suplex to Cole from the top of the cage down onto everyone else was really great too.  It really made the crowd lose their minds.  I’m not the least bit shocked at the outcome and I absolutely loved the match!

Yes, I like exclamation points!

If you saw this like I did, I’m sure you do too!  If you haven’t, what are you waiting for?!?!?!?
