This one comes from the Aztec Theater in San Antonio. TX. Different setting, different crowd. Let’s dive in, shall we?
Street Profits vs. Riddick Moss & Tino Sabbatelli
Montez’s cowboy hat tho! I was loving that! We got more of Mauro’s tired “I’m down, yo, and I want you to know it” references to Jay Z’s Grammy nominations. He kept doing it throughout and it felt like he was just desperate to keep up with the younger and hipper Percy Watson. UGH!
Anyway, it’s nice to see these two teams getting a real opportunity. I loved that while Angelo was working, Montez stayed very much involved cheering his teammate on. Many times, the tag team partner will forget he should still be working and Montez never forgets that. I also loved that when Angelo’s black headband fell off as he left the ring, Montez picked it up and put it on himself. Montez is absolutely dripping in charisma. Angelo always was too; he just needed someone to play off of. Now he has it and these two should get quite far. We got some really nice “Let’s go, Profits” chants during the match too so this team is over with the NXT audience.
Watching Riddick mock Montez as he stood over him was a riot (not riott) too. Tino plays a good heel too who will only get better as he does more of it so the feud works well. I always liked Angelo’s rotating Stinger Splash. The ending sequence was very nicely done with Riddick trying to be dirty by holding Angelo’s feat while Tino pinned him and not getting away with it. This ultimately lead to a very nice splash from Montez to end what was a very good match.
Backstage: Tyler Bate and Trent Seven
I have no reason to care about either one of these guys and this promo did them no favors. It was completely awful and I still have no reason to care about them. Of course, the WWE has done them no favors by featuring them in almost nothing. Still, they could have improved their lot with this promo and…they didn’t.
Backstage: Mark Andrews
Again, no reason to care. He recited his lines badly and did nothing more. Both promos are deserving of at least a crown because they did get the points across fairly well. Moving on…
Kairi Sane vs. Peyton Royce
Kairi’s gimmick is completely silly and truly terrible. She comes out in pirate gear carrying a ship steering wheel to the ring! Who came up with this nonsense?? Again, UGH! As for Peyton, Billie Kay and she make incredible “mean girls”. They’ve done quite well for themselves. Kairi’s work is incredible so there’s nothing to plain about there. As great as it was, Peyton’s selling and reaction to certain things Kairi did was just inspired. The exasperated look on her face as Peyton was running the ropes when she kept having to step over Kairi was high-larious! I’m hoping Peyton and Billie are somewhat close to being called up.
Kairi’s biggest issue is that her charisma is that of a lighter Asuka. She’s not really different enough yet. As she progresses in NXT, hopefully that will materialize.
Tyler Bate & Trent Seven vs. Pete Dunne & Mark Andrews
No question that these boys can work a ring! Trent is 35 years-old and is absolutely not the body type Vince likes. Worse yet, his ring gear totally accentuates all of it. Still, the man can go and he sells well too. When Dunne was…ahem…manipulating Pete’s fingers, Trent sold it very well. I’d easily put him in the top 5 sellers on the entire roster. He’s really that convincing. It made both Dunne and Andrews look that much better. Call me old skool if you must but I love great selling. Andrews Standing Corkscrew Moonsault was really nice! The best part for me was Tyler’s….AIRPLANE SPIN! He took Andrews for the ride and it just warmed by geriatric heart! When was the last time we saw that move?
Pete Dunne attacked Mark Andrews at the end so Dunne and Andrews are now in a feud. Hopefully, they’ll both be able to make me care about it.
Therein lies the problem with the UK stuff. I have no reason to care about the outcomes of their matches. I need more from all of them so that I can begin to care. Hopefully, NXT will let me have that.
All in all, this was another solid edition of NXT. The hour time limit has always been used to great affect by NXT as they really pack it well and no time is wasted. Come on back next week for another edition of “The Illustrious Future”.
