It would seem Dave Meltzer has decided to put his foot squarely in his mouth. On the recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez spoke on the IIconics and how they have not transitioned well to the main roster. It was going fine until Meltzer decided to put his foot in his mouth with some comments unbecoming to anybody.
Meltzer, “I think Peyton Royce’s transformation to look more attractive, uh I don’t know, I don’t want to say.”
Alvarez, “She was more attraction in NXT?”
Meltzer, *pauses* “I thought so. Yeah. To me yes. But you know that’s neither here nor there.”
Alvarez, “No one is saying she’s unattractive by the way everybody.”
Meltzer, “I know, no sh*t. Yeah I didn’t say it at all. She doesn’t stand out to me but in NXT she did. She was a lot lighter.”
Someone would tweet the audio clip to Peyton Royce and she was quick to give a response to it that I am 100% behind.
So what would you have me do Dave… starve myself? 🤯🤯🤯 This is how nightmares for young women start. The females in your life must be proud. https://t.co/8MNpZNsR7m

Many people in the industry were quick to voice their opinions on the matter as well.
I’m sorry. But this makes me sick. https://t.co/2khtHFgH1A

What a true piece of sweltering hot garbage. You’re an angel too good for this earth. He’d be lucky if you gave him the time of day. Which you would, because you’re also a great person. Love ya girl. Let’s set better examples

This is unacceptable on so many levels. How dare you say that someone is more attractive when they are ‘lighter’. You have no idea how stupid comments like this can affect someone for life.@PeytonRoyceWWE is PERFECT just the way she is. A strong & beautiful WOMAN! https://t.co/1FDakcolpf

After all the backlash from this, Meltzer took to Twitter to offer his apologies for his comments.
I'd like to apologize to you. You are an exceedingly attractive woman. I do realize the lengths and pressures on women in the entertainment world to maintain unnatural looks at times and am glad you pointed this out. https://t.co/qkgOrpVQOX

S.A.M.’s Spiel: This is totally unacceptable by Meltzer and he deserves all this backlash and then some. Meltzer, whether you take his opinions on pro wrestling serious or not, has been a fixture in the world of professional wrestling and these comments are something I expect to see from the worst of the IWC and not someone of his stature. Speaking about how someone is not as attractive, or any sort of body shaming is unacceptable behavior. 10 years ago, this sort of comment would have been swept under the rug as nothing, but people will NOT tolerate this type of behavior anymore.
