WWE’s Failed Lynching of Becky

On Tuesday night’s Smackdown Live, WWE tried to turn Becky Lynch heel, but it failed miserably. This is an opinion piece from me on why I feel it failed so horribly and how WWE can resolve this.

Backstage news is that Vince has wanted to turn Becky heel for a while now, but never really saw a chance or opportunity to do so. I guess he felt that following the amazing match at SummerSlam, it was time to do so. However, Becky has been far too over with the WWE audience for far too long. From the start, this just had failure written all over it. Charlotte, on the other hand, has had her runs as a heel and many in the WWE Universe were getting tired of her being face, because honestly, she plays a villainous character all too well!

So on Tuesday (SPOILER), Becky turned her back on Charlotte and attacked her on Smackdown. This including an amazing rant against Charlotte on why Becky wasn’t good enough to be Champion and liked by the audience. However, the audience stood 100% in Becky’s corner, and even cheered her attack on Charlotte. The goal here was to turn Becky heel, and make Charlotte a true face, but as you can see, it backfired spectacularly in WWE’s face. If you haven’t seen it, you can watch the video below:

Now, this isn’t the first time we have seen this happen. In 2010, WWE had The Legacy (Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes) turn on Randy Orton after weeks of Orton beating up on the two of them. The goal there was to make The Legacy face and Orton heel, but no one bought it, to the point WWE had to reverse the roles after two weeks and make Legacy heel and Orton face.

It already appears that WWE is on the same page with this happening. You can watch the video below that is posted to WWE’s YouTube page and see how heavily edited it is for yourself. They cut out her ripping apart the audience and talking poorly about her friends and fans.

This just goes to show that on some instances, fans can and do play a role in what happens in the ring and backstage. But will WWE continue to try and push Lynch as a heel or will they reverse it and make Charlotte heel? Only time will tell and we will likely have our answer Tuesday on Smackdown. But if they keep pushing the heel Lynch, they risk alienating fans yet again.

In my honest opinion, this is a huge opportunity for Vince and the writers to do the right thing and listen to the audience again. Keep Lynch face and turn Charlotte. By doing this, it’s a win-win for everyone, both in the ring and in the audience.
