Over the past week, there has been a ton of heat on WWE to cancel the Crown Jewel event scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 3rd from Saudi Arabia. This all stems from the supposed planned murder of Jamal Khashoggi by the Saudi Arabian Crown Prince. In the time since, there has been tons of news coverage of the Crown Jewel, but we at Wrestle Royalty decided to hold off to report all the news at once and once verification of certain things happened. Having said that, here we go!
As stated previously, there is very strong speculation that on October 2nd, 2018, Mr. Khashoggi, a journalist for Saudi Arabia, was tortured, murdered, and dismembered on the orders given by the Saudi Crown Prince. It has gone so far now, that on October 10th, 2018, several US Senators and Congressmen & Congresswomen called on Linda McMahon, whom is a prominent figure in the Trump Cabinet, to cancel the Crown Jewel event. Ever since then, WWE has been scrambling in an attempt to make alternate arrangements for the event.
The first option that was discussed by WWE officials was the obvious, try to sweep the issue under the rug and hold the event anyways. This idea had a massive reaction from fans, politicians, celebrity’s, and even WWE Superstars past and present. Many were against the event going forward and even began a #CancelCrownJewel trend on both Twitter and Facebook.
The second option discussed by WWE officials was to hold the events scheduled matches at Survivor Series 3 weeks later. This idea has run into several conflicts regarding contracts of certain Superstars, most prominent involves Brock Lesnar as he was set to get a near $3 million payday for his appearance. If WWE were to do this, WWE would have to pay Brock the full amount out of their own pockets, which Vince does NOT want to do.
The third option is something that just began to be reported yesterday evening. Officials at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK have been in discussions with WWE to hold the event at either their arena, or another arena close by and make the Crown Jewel a 3 day event. This is most probable due to Raw and Smackdown being in Manchester on November 5th and 6th. The Crown Jewel event would be held on Sunday, November 4th at 7:30pm local time (2:30pm EST).
So what do we know as of right now? As of 1pm EST on Sunday, October 14th, ALL information pertaining to Crown Jewel location, tickets, and card information has been removed from the WWE website. We at Wrestle Royalty do NOT know with exact certainty what this move means for the event. However, with the removal of information, it appears the event itself will NOT be happening in Saudi Arabia.
There is backstage discussion happening at WWE right now that appears to point to them moving the event to Manchester, UK officially with an announcement being made on Monday Night Raw tomorrow. Not confirmed, but internal sources within WWE are reporting that Manchester is willing to split the cost of running Crown Jewel from their location. If true, this is a massive deal that Vince would not be able to pass up as it would significantly reduce the cost burden on WWE. The exact location of the possible venue has not been discussed within WWE.
Jester Jason will be attending Raw in Philadelphia tomorrow night and will be breaking any and all news he sees and/or hears! This is all breaking news and we will be sure to provide more information as soon as it breaks!
Jester’s Jest: From a personal standpoint, I am more than happy to see the original location for Crown Jewel cancelled! I was never a fan of them returning there following the backout from promises made to WWE previously regarding women’s rights in Saudi Arabia, especially just 1 week removed from Evolution.
