Hey, kids, it’s the Botching One with another look at “205 Live” with “The Pickup”. This week, the tournament to find the new number-one contender to face Buddy Murphy at WrestleMania.
Cinéma de Get Familiar – Oney Lorcan
He’s been on NXT for quite some time and really nothing has been done with him. He’s good in the ring but his personality is nearly non-existent. As a result, I didn’t really care about this vignette. He spoke very matter-of-factly but showed no personality so I still have no reason to care.
Oney Lorcan vs. Humberto Carrillo
…and the crowd really didn’t either as Lorcan got zero response when he came out. Humberto briefly spoke before his match. I really like that they’re letting him speak in Spanish. He’s so much more comfortable doing that and it adds dimension to him. His English was kept brief and it was effective. Onto the match…
This was good. With these two, it always will be. Loved Gulak & Gallagher looking on with Humberto face t-shirts on. Hilarious! Oney is very bare-bones old-school beat ’em until they give up. Oney’s chops left Humberto’s chest in tatters. Carrillo kept favoring it through the match too so he was miserable. It didn’t affect his work though. He decimated poor Carrillo with a fisherman’s suplex on the ring apron. It looked just sickening.
Humberto is lucha personified. He flies through the air with the greatest of ease and few do it better.
I was absolutely certain that Carrillo would take this and I was wrong. I never thought Oney would move forward in the tournament. This is quite a surprise. I don’t know what to think about it either. Odd…
Backstage segment – Mike Kanellis, Maria Kanellis, & Drake Maverick
Nicely done. Drake’s trying to help and the Kanellis couple don’t want it. Kanellis’ losing streak is only rivaled by that of Curt Hawkins and it’s a riot. I’m interested to see where it goes.
Mike Kanellis (w/ Maria Kanellis) vs. Colby Corino
It’s always so interesting that Maria is announced first when they come out. Shows you who they value the most. Colby is, of course, the son of trainer extraordinaire, Steve Corino. Colby is here to be a punching bag and he did it well. Mike has become completely vicious and I like it. Statement made. Let’s see where this goes.
Cinéma de iPhone – Tony Nese
They’ve really turned a corner with him and he’s doing well. Even his promos are better and less hack.
Backstage segment – Cedric Alexander
This wasn’t bad. I actually felt something from this which is not always the case with him. I’ll take it. It sells his determination and it spoke to what we’re all saying: “how many chances is he gonna get”?
Akira Tozawa vs. Cedric Alexander
These two can just flat-out go. This is the one I was most looking forward to this week and it didn’t let me down in any way. It got about twenty minutes and they used it all to tell a great story. They even got some “205” chants – more than one instance of them too. They weren’t incredibly loud but they were there. Few do a prettier inverted rana than Tozawa. It was just picture perfect. Cedric brought the power game here throughout. Stellar match and Cedric goes over. He even had a nice moment with Tozawa there at the end. Tozawa was quite emotional and I’m not sure why.
