Keeping the Lights On

Hey, kids.  It’s the Botching One with yet another Deep Dive into this week’s Friday Night Smackdown.  This is the first of a two-part Draft and they really went all out to make it look legitimate – getting Fox sports personalities involved and having draft rooms.  It was pretty different and, on the whole, I liked it.  I won’t rate those segments or Stephanie’s draft announcements either.  No real reason to, honestly.

Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins

So this was about who would get the first pick.  Put the two biggest stars of their respective brands against each other.  Okay, makes sense.  This was a decent match, of course.  I loved Seth’s counter of Roman’s spear into the Pedigree.  Something new!  Of course, this match couldn’t end with a clear winner.  The Fiend appeared ingeniously through the ring and dragged Rollins under the ring with him.  Rollins crawled back out and Bray looked at him as he lay on the mat.

They are handling The Fiend so breathtakingly well at this point.  He is indestructible and it’s a truly beautiful thing to see WWE handle a character so well.  Speaking of which, there seems to be a major misunderstanding of what happened at HIAC.

There was no disqualification called by the ref.  He stopped it.  That’s it and that’s all.

People have lost their ever-loving minds about this and claimed that they ruined the ending.  I disagree completely.  I thought it was great.  Bray was kept looking indestructible, Seth looked good, and best of all, the title didn’t change hands.  Had Bray won, it would have made absolutely no sense as why should a Fiend care about a title belt?  He’s here to torment and he’s doing a fantastic job of that thus far.  Can’t wait for more!

Fox & USA Draft Rooms

Really?  Really?  Really?  They really want this to look legitimate, don’t they?  It’s fake and we know it.  Still, a fun touch.

Stephanie McMahon – The Draft #1

Becky Lynch, Roman Reigns, The OC (AJ Styles, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson), “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt, Drew McIntyre

Why did anyone draft “The Fiend”.  It seems to me that HE should be the one to decide where he goes.  Nothing conventional should effect him in any way.  Either way, I’m glad I get to write about him every week.

Draft panel:  Booker T, Samoa Joe, Beth Phoenix, & Renee Young

Joe with the savage line.  “Glad to see you’re keeping the lights on at your house”.  DAG!  Given the way that was delivered, I firmly believe Joe just said it.  Either way, I loved it and Renee took it like a champ.  I’m sure there’ll be more of them.

King Corbin vs. Shorty Gable

You hate him, don’t you?  You should!  That’s what he wants you to do…and you’re doing it.  He’s got you and you hate it.  He is slime and it’s great.  He’s a really good heel; just deal with it…LOL!

As for Shorty, Corbin named him and there it is.  It is his right.  I can’t call him by a name they aren’t using.  Corbin showed little to no mercy here and he basked in the heat.  Gable’s strength is just crazy.  The german suplex from a prone position was just incredible.  It ended with an End of Days and now they’re bouncing back and forth with victories.

NFL panel – Curt Menafee, Tony Gonzales, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, & Michael Strahan

They don’t know anything about the current WWE stars (this isn’t football and it’s nothing like that as the outcomes are pre-determined) so they talked about the dino-wrestlers of yesteryear.  They said nothing that mattered.

Stephanie McMahon – Draft #2

Randy Orton, Sasha Banks, Ricochet, Braun Strowman, Bobby Lashley

Draft panel

Booker is beyond annoying.  He just is.  I cringe at the thought of him being with Renee on the new FS1 show.  Guess I’ll have to endure Booker once to see it.  If it isn’t my thing, I can always just not watch, right?

Brock Lesnar (w/ Paul Heyman), Rey Mysterio, & Cain Velasquez

I really could listen to Paul tell a story all night long and not feel my time was wasted in any way.  He’s just so good at it.  He is 99% of Brock’s presence and charisma.  I love that he didn’t try to act like Cain just had a good night when he decimated Brock.  He admitted that Cain was the better man that night.  He also walked straight into the Kofi thing like a boss.

Then, it got corny.  Rey Mysterio has been responsible for some of the worst mic work in recent weeks…yet he’s the mouthpiece for Cain?  He wasn’t good here either; not embarrassing, just not good.  Cain was actually better here – sticking to his native Spanish.  Here’s hoping he finds a gym before their match as he looked truly terrible last week from a conditioning standpoint.  I really don’t enjoy seeing manboobies on my TV.

The New Day & Cancer Survivors

Xavier was really affected here.  I though he was going to break down for a second.  The presentation of the belts was cool too.

Oh, the elephant.  Yeah, I see it.  We have no idea what will become of Kofi. I’m not yet ready to say he’s buried.  Wanna know why?

The New Day (Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, & Big E.) vs. The OC (AJ Styles, Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson)

This was a fun match.  As is always the case, Xavier lights it up nicely.  Kofi was fun here too and…he pinned AJ Styles cleanly.  That’s not what happens to workers who are being buried.  How he managed to pin AJ so easily is just bizarre.

Stephanie McMahon – The Draft #3

Alexa Bliss, Lacey Evans, Kevin Owens, The Revival (Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder), Natalya

Stephanie McMahon – The Draft #4

Viking Raiders (Erik & Ivar), Lucha House Party (Kalisto, Gran Metalik, Lince Dorado, Nikki Cross, Heavy Machinery (Otis & Tucker), Street Profits (Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins)

P.S.:  I hate Sam SO MUCH!  I was hoping Smackdown would get Street Profits.  AAAHHHHH!!!!!!!

Charlotte Flair vs. Bayley

Well.  Played.  Loved every second of this transformation.  Bayley handled all of that extremely well – cutting and dyeing her hair and destroying the Bayley buddies.  It’s also effected her ring work and she’s a bit darker in there as well.  She’s certainly more hard-hitting as she actually made Charlotte bleed.  I can’t recall her ever making an opponent bleed before.  What she was yelling at the ref was pretty cheesy (“are you sure?!?!?”…what??) but this is still new to her.  Charlotte has really figured out her moonsault and she nails it every time now.  Bayley picked up the dirty victory and, thus, the title.  She even cursed on the mic.  Wow…

This was the heel turn we’ve been waiting for since Watergate.  Time will reveal how well this all works.  So far, not bad at all.

Well, that is one way to end “Friday Night Smackdown”.  Didn’t see any of that coming as I’d long since given up hope on Bayley turning.  The picks were interesting and this was, overall, a pretty enjoyable episode.  See you all for “Raw” where the draft will continue!
