Protect Ya Neck, Eddie (AEW Review)

Hey, kids!  It’s the Botching One with another entry into our Elite Journal.  Dynamite has been an absolute blast lately and this episode was no different.  Natalie, LDB, and I had a blast in DD with this show.  Let’s get into it, shall we?

Wardlow vs. “Hangman” Adam Page

This is now the second week that Wardlow has opened the show.  We’re really getting to see what he’s made of rather than just being muscle for MJF…and he’s made of really good stuff.  This was a very solid match.  Page is no slouch and he had NO problem hanging (see what I did there?) with him.  That superplex from Page onto Wardlow was just beautiful.  Wardlow didn’t take this but both of them showed out here.  Just a really solid match.  Both LDB and I were loving it.

Backstage segment – Jon Moxley

He’s just so good at this stuff.  This is the match I care most about.  Eddie and Mox have TOTALLY talked me into this.  If you know their history, you’re into it too.  I cannot wait.

Eddie Kingston vs. Matt Sydal

“You never trained to be in here”.  He’ll even go off on the cameraman.  LOL!!!  He’s such slime.  The fourth wall is not impervious to Kingston and I am HERE for it!

As soon as Sydal started, LDB said, “Please don’t botch this”.  I was thinking that too.  He’s actually really good in there so he did very well here.   I love that Kingston doesn’t have that body type but he still comes off as formidable force.  He even made Sydal say “I quit”.  I really loved the Rana Sydal executed on Kingston.  They both made it look just amazing.  Sydal sold really well for him and now I’m ready to see Mox & Kingston tear it down at Full Gear

Backstage segment – FTR & Young Bucks

This was basically Matt doing the whole thing…and nailing.  Love that FTR basically walked off when Excalibur didn’t pay enough attention to them.  I wish Excalibur had sold it more (he barely acknowledged their exit) but the Bucks & FTR did well here.  While Excalibur kinda wasn’t here for this, the teams were and this was fun.

Town Hall – Chris Jericho, MFJ, Ortiz, Sammy Guevara, Eric Bischoff, Luchasaurus, Dr. Britt Baker, Reba, & Peter Avalon

“The Jacksonville Children’s Choir”.  I am DEAD!  Luchasaurus was hilarious!  Britt and Reba were so much fun too.  Peter Avalon was a nice surprise.  Haven’t seen him do anything on Dynamite in ages.  Bischoff!  Didn’t see that coming.  This was everything I hoped it’d be.  It was absolutely delicious.  “Chris Jericho, shut up!”  Love it!  Ortiz and Sammy have NO desire to have him in the Inner Circle and I love it.  This is going to be the uneasiest marriage we’ve ever seen.

Cody vs. Orange Cassidy

Fun match.  I love that the Best Friends caught Orange’s trust fall and dropped Cody.  The harsh reality of it all…LOL!  This was a lumberjack thing so, of course, it had to break down and it did.  The superplex onto the crowd was really fun.   Silver got involved to screw Orange out of the match.  That feud is ready to go if they want it.

Backstage segment – Miro, Kip Sabian, Penelope Ford, Trent, & Chuck Taylor

They want video game vengeance so we know what’s coming.  Penelope as Orange was fun.  Not much here but we got a little more storytelling.

Serena Deeb vs. Leyla Hirsh

Well, we know now that Serena can’t talk.  That promo was just wretched.  I half expected her to accuse someone of “turning the tables in a wrong way” (if you know, you know).  This, the one obligatory women’s match we get on each “Dynamite”, wasn’t bad, actually.  I don’t care about Hirsch but she did well here. Why did Serena just go back to wear Leyla was? Huh?  Like, she walked back to Leyla after she’d been punished.  If you saw it, you understand my confusion.  Beyond that oddity, this was a fairly solid match.  Serena certainly doesn’t lack in ring work; she just lacks in everything else.  Hopefully, she can get the other stuff together.

Backstage segment – Hikaru Shida

Short and sweet.  English isn’t her thing so this had to be kept short and it was.  Point made.

Shawn Spears (w/ Tully Blanchard) vs. VSK

Incredibly short and inconsequential.  ‘Course, that’s true of all matches Spears is in.  Scorpio was a welcome site here.  He has more charisma in his pinky finger than Spears has in his whole body.  Spears is very much a failed experiment.  Next…

Penta El Zero Miero vs. Kenny Omega

Clinic – that’s what this was.  This was also a psychological clinic.  The AAA championship he won from Miero was a very nice touch.  So cheap and I loved it.  LOL!!  Miero showed some real personality during the “chop battle”.  He was just a riot here.  This match had everything we love in great wrestling matches.  They flew, they hit hard, and a great story went with it.  They were both just so fluid.  Towards the end of the match, it was clear that Omega was just trying to hurt Miero and that made total sense too.  Omega’s reaction at the near-fall was a riot.  There was just so much good stuff here that I can’t cover it all.  It truly isn’t enough to read about this match; you need to see it.  Trust me.  It was that good.

Really fun episode.  That final match was amazing and the Town Hall was as great as I knew it’d be.  The Shawn Spears match was a total waste like all of his matches are and Serena Deeb cannot talk to save her life.  Beyond that, this was a really great episode.  Full Gear is set up to be a total blast…as long as they don’t blow it.  They’ve blown it before but they may not be able to sink this card.  I hope I’m right.  See you all next week for another Journal entry!
