Fire Face…BEYOND BLUNDERDOME!

Well, here it is – our last time together.  Sam has returned (as those in DD now know) so this’ll be my last Raw blog [insert sad face].  It has really been a lot of fun.  What I thought might be a chore has been anything but.  Oh, Raw blog.  We’ll always have Paris.

Okay, on with the show…

Miz-TV – The Miz, John Morrison, Randy Orton, New Day (Xavier Woods & Kofi Kingston), & Drew McIntyre

Orton was really rolling here.  He was speaking like an auctioneer in there.  I love that he spent some time shooting on Morrison and Miz.  Real life penetrating the promos.  Who doesn’t love that?  Poor Morrison.  He absolutely took the worst of it.  New Day made a fun quick appearance – only for Kofi to be RKO’d out of his kicks and Xavier was quickly disposed of.  Fun little segment that created heat all over the place.

In-ring segment – Elias

He just wins.  I love him always.  This was high-larious.  He kept waiting for interruptions and was a riot doing it.  LOL!!  Of course, then Jeff came out and it was less fun.  It was short but it was what it needed to be.

Elias vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Riddle

I really wish Elias was done with Jeff.  He immediately makes any segment or match he’s in less interesting because he just phones everything in.  Elias was quite hard-hitting here.  You can say whatever you want about Riddle but he can get it done in the ring.  He was really good in there as he always is.  He came away with the win and I’m not mad at all.  Well done all the way around.

P.S.:  This was not a typo.  His name was really changed to just Riddle.  No clue why.

Backstage segment – AJ Styles, Jordan Omogbehin, Braun Strowman, & Sheamus

So much discord.  I am here for it.  Fun segment.  A team meeting is coming soon…and I think I love it.  Jordan (why does this man not have a name yet?) stood there and did exactly nothing.  Perfect!

Backstage segment – Retribution (Mustafa Ali, T-Bar, Mace, Reckoning, & Slapjack)

They’re doing what they can.  It’s not their fault.  Word is that Mercedes Martinez, who was used at the very beginning of this angle, asked out of it.  If true, that has thus far proven to be a very smart decision.  If they don’t turn this whole thing around and quick, it’s not gonna even matter.  Here’s hoping they can.

Backstage segment – Hurt Business and Drew Gulak

Gulak is a riot and can thrive in any position he’s put in.  Drew is a champion now so he’s on their level…or not.  The look on Shelton’s face when MVP looked for approval for Gulak to join the Hurt Business.  LOL!!  Of course, it led to an unholy beatdown.  Extra points for Drew’s hair transplant.  It looks excellent.  No shade, it really does.

Lana vs. Shayna Baszler (w/ Mandy Rose & Dana Brooke)

Shayna was a bit soft with Lana but it still looked fine.  Queen noticed it and I did too.  At least, it was a very short match.  Of course, they tried to put Lana through a table but Mandy & Dana stopped her.  Dana was, yet again, a charisma vacuum and Mandy carried the day both on commentary and at the very end.  Neither of them were amazing there and both felt a bit mannered.  The whole thing was intended to create tension between Nia & Shayna and Mandy & Dana.  Because none of them (except Nia and, of course, Lana) really went for it, it didn’t fly.

Backstage segment – Lana, Mandy Rose, & Dana Brooke

Dana just doesn’t get it at all.  No clue why they’re still trying with her.  She just gives so little and she’s so stiff.  Mandy and Lana told the story here.  Poor Lana is an island and she’s doing this really well.

Team Meeting:  AJ Styles (w/ Jordan Omogbehin), Keith Lee, Riddle, Sheamus, & Braun Strowman

Keith is so corny…and I absolutely love it.  It makes him unique.  AJ does “frazzled Cornette” extremely well.  Riddle is a riot.  The names tho.  LOL!!  One of them had to be the blog name.

Keith Lee & Riddle vs. Braun Strowman & Sheamus (w/ AJ Styles Aas special guest referee)

I loved this.  Poor AJ.  He took damage like a champ.  This really was fun.  Keith using Riddle to do damage with his own Spirit Bomb was inspired.  Riddle was a lot of fun in there just on the whole…and this was his second match of the evening.  Even Jordan almost got involved when AJ was in the wrong place at the wrong time one too many times.  Of course, this couldn’t solve anything and it didn’t.  Riddle & Lee took this but at what cost?

Backstage segment Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross

Poor Nikki.  Nikki is essentially being left behind and she’s trying to hang on.  She’s doing this really well.  Alexa, of course, is too.  Not sure where Nikki goes from here.  Dre seems to think she might be the Rumble winner.  Sam thinks she goes to the Firefly Fun House to get her back.

In-ring segment – MVP, Bobby Lashley, & Titus O’Neil

MVP is always compelling on the mic.  They’re all scripted and we know that but Titus just sounded so completely scripted.  Titus has been working out.

Bobby Lashley vs. Titus O’Neil

This was short and incredibly ugly.  They had no chemistry and Titus was just a mess in there.  I have nothing good to say about this.  It was absolutely awful and Titus needs to be through in the ring.  He really flopped around in there.  He even slipped in the ring a couple of times. In all the time I’ve been writing this blog in Sam’s absence, I haven’t yet used a skull.  Here, there is no choice.  He’s one heck of a humanitarian and a great person on the whole.  As a wrestler, he’s basically done and this proved it.

Backstage segment – Drew McIntyre & Sheamus

Very enjoyable.  They’ve known each other for years and the chemistry is unmistakable.  Great job from both of them.  Felt real and organic.  I’m getting whiplash going from the very bad to the very good like that in such short order.

Asuka vs. Nia Jax

Why tho?  I’m guessing there are…reasons.  Noemy and I don’t get it at all.  The promo that opened the match was fun.  Nia has been stepping it up in that department quite nicely lately.  Nia took submission moves from Asuka in rapid-fire succession and did it well.  Asuka really didn’t even matter here.  Think about for a second.  Asuka, the RAW WOMEN’S CHAMPION, didn’t matter here.  Speaks for itself, really.

Poor Lana.  She just keeps blowing it but always with the best of intentions.  They want her to be a mega babyface and I never didn’t like her myself.  She ate table as usual to close this out.  She deserves a statue in the park for this.  Nia nailed too.  I’m warming to her.  So sue me.  LOL!!

Backstage segment – R-Truth

Poor guy.  He has to defend against seven other people.  I love how wrong he had it.  “Clip on magazine”…nice botch.  He’s a riot and an absolute shoo-in for the HOF if there’s any justice.

Backstage segment – Angel Garza

Not sure what they’re getting at with this.  A tweak is occurring and I’m fine with it.   This is hyper-scripted and uninteresting at this point.  We’ll see where it goes

Tucker, Erik, Lince Dorado, Gran Metallik, Drew Gulak, Tozawa vs. R-Truth

This wasn’t possible to keep up with…and I love it.  What an unholy mess.  Everyone won.  R-Truth was the last winner and he got away with the title.  This was life itself.  This was the best thing on the whole show.  It’s entertainment, kids – all of it is…and I was entertained.  Come at me, bro!

Mustafa Ali vs. Ricochet

These two are great so there wasn’t any way they weren’t gonna use their time well and they did.  This was a really solid match and they gave it time.  That Hurricanrana on Mustafa!  The way he slammed into the floor!  The Backstabber from the top rope onto Chet wasn’t very nice either.  Mustafa was trying to teach a lesson here and Chet took damage while he did it.  I wouldn’t mind Chet joining them, really.  He has nothing else going on and it’d get him on TV if nothing else.

Backstage segment – Randy Orton & Adam Pearce

Adam tried to get him to defend the title against Drew and he…um…said no.  HA!  I love this menacing version of Randy.  Nice segment.  Adam sold it well too without being a shrinking violet.

Randy Orton, The Miz, & John Morrison vs. New Day (Xavier Woods & Kofi Kingston) & Drew McIntyre

Sam commented in the DD on the joy on Woods’ face when he in the ring.  Haven’t seen it in a while but it’s palpable.  Woods really missed it.  Woods took some nice damage here.  I love that Orton stayed away from everything from the most part while Miz & Morrison did everything.  Drew had one heck of a hot tag.  The audio sweetening when Drew went for the Claymore Kick was incredibly obvious.  Fun match all around though.

So ends another episode of Raw…and this incarnation of the Raw blog.  Wait till you see what’s coming next week.  This has been a lot of fun.  See you next week for…the next thing.
