Despite coming out strong at Double Or Nothing 2019 with a highly regarded Joshi showcase match, All Elite Wrestling is widely seen to have one of the weakest and poorly booked Women’s Divisions in all of Pro Wrestling. This fact has been acknowledged by both the company’s President Tony Kahn and the people responsible for booking the division Kenny Omega and Brandi Rhodes. However, it looks like AEW is getting ready to put more attention to their fledgling Women’s roster.
AEW has announced they crown a new Women’s Title Number One Contender through a tournament.
The winner of the tournament would face Hikaru Shida, the reigning AEW Women’s Champion. Shida has been the champion since AEW Double or Nothing 2020 when she defeated Nyla Rose. She has made six successful defences of the title, including a recent victory over Abadon at AEW New Year’s Smash night two:

Sir Mitch Says: The first struck me about this announcement was the Japanese flag included in the brackets. Most of AEW’s Joshi stars (consistently the few bright spots of the division) have been stuck in Japan due to the pandemic but it looks like they may be returning for this tournament. The first AEW Women’s Champion Riho had just recently announced her departure from the Stardom promotion and Yuka Sakasaki recently lost the Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling Princess Of Princess Championship so expect them to take part. One also has to wonder if any Knockouts will take part with the recent working relationship between AEW and Impact Wrestling currently going at full speed.
