It’s Wednesday…and you know what that means! It’s time for another AEW blog! Last week was fun and based on what we know is coming, this should be really fun too. Let’s get to it!
-1’s B-day Celebration – Dark Order (-1, Alex Reynolds, John Silver, Preston Vance, Colt Cabana, Anna Jay), Chaos Project (Luther, Serpentico, Hybrid2), & Adam Page
It really is so nice how AEW looks after Brodie’s son. Even better is that he’s totally into being included this way. It was fun that this was made into a conflict. Lutha went after -1 as if the promo was real. He took -1’s words very seriously which made it even more fun. It led straight into the match. It was absolutely seamless and I like it.
Chaos Project (Lutha X, Serpentico, Jack Evans, & Angelico) vs. Dark Order (John Silver, Alex Reynolds, Colt Cabana, & Hangman Adam Page
Fun match! Still hate the way people wait at the bottom while workers moonsault on top of them (dumb spot, Page & Co.). The pyramid spot was less than logical but it was fun. -1 got involved with the Singapore cane and Lutha ate cake. The side story is how well Page worked with Dark Order. We’ll see if he ultimately decides to join them later tonight. I’m intrigued.
“My birthday was three days ago, you idiots!” Oh geez. Too funny. So like his dad. LOL!!!
John Silver is an absolute star. Yes, I’m repeating myself. They were so ready for him to say yes. They even had a celebration start but Page let them down. Watching them squash the impending celebration just killed me. LOL!! Sadly, Page doesn’t want to be in a group. He’s not joining Dark Order…and an angel has lost its wings…
Backstage segment – MJF & Chris Jericho
It’d really help if Marvez would react to…anything. He was so dead face here for the most part. MJF seared Marvez and he didn’t even react. Like…whatever. MJF and Jericho here were their typical amazing selves.
In-ring segment – Darby Allin, Sting, and Team Taz (Taz, Ricky Starks, Brian Cage, Powerhouse Hobbs, & Hook)
It’s truly amazing to me that Tony Schiavone has lost absolutely nothing since he began. He has every bit the fire he always had. He’s every bit as quick as he always has been. He just refuses to age. Other than the beard, he’s as he always was. Very impressive. They are building Darby into a very big deal and I am totally here for it. Sting began to speak and Taz interrupted. Taz was fine but I still say they simply don’t need him. Starks could do all the talking and do it well. We’re now getting a street fight. That should be fun.
Cinéma de Elite – Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson), Nakazawa, Don Callis
I love that Callis is just trying to dismiss the Bucks with money. Callis is manipulating Kenny for his own ends. LOL! This was a little stilted. Stuff like this really would benefit from a script. It was just a bit of a mess that didn’t go as it could have had things been written down even just in bullet point form.
“Pretty” Peter Avalon vs. Cody Rhodes
Avalon has been a staple of AEW Dark forever and I’m glad to see him on Dynamite in the ring for once. Jade Cargill came out to mess with Cody a little and Peter benefitted. I love Avalon’s sell of the Superplex he executed on Cody. LOL!! They were not taking it easy on each other with those chops. Dag! Cody sells well so he made Avalon’s stuff look good. Peter’s own selling is a little cartoon-y but I don’t mind it. Some of the looks he gets on his face are a little much. Cody’s cutter on Avalon was a little off but it worked. That end sequence with Avalon slapping him, reacting like he did something dumb, and Cody turning it on was pretty silly but okay. All in all, a pretty good match and Avalon made TV. Congrats to him.
Cinema de FTR – FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) & Jurassic Express (Luchasaurus, Jungle Boy, & Marko Stunt)
The title came from here. Salt and pepper. Dude, you’re bald. Just sayin’. Fun to hear Jack do some talking. He did fairly well, though he did lack fire. The match between Dax & Jungle Boy next week should be fun though.
Jon Moxley vs. Nick Comoroto
Comoroto has been on EVOLVE and been used on NXT house shows. He’s also a student of QT Marshall & Dustin Rhodes. Commentary talked him up a lot to try to get us invested him while he got in his stuff on Mox. He looked pretty good here and Mox sold for him. Schiavone mentioned that he looked a lot like Bruiser Brody and he really does. That was the first thing I thought. I do think Mox should have been more dominant here than he was but this was fine for what it was.
Backstage segment – Eddie Kingston, Butcher, Blade, & Bunny, Lance Archer, & Jake Roberts
Nice tension here. Lance got in Kingston’s face and the fire felt very real. Jake’s voice has become ashes but he pulled off his part of this well. It was disorganized and chaotic but that’s real.
Backstage segment – Don Callis & Kenny Omega
Callis is totally manipulating Kenny Omega. This is becoming more fun and Callis is so hate-able now. Didn’t get enough fire from Callis when he kicked out Marvez but it didn’t hurt things too much.
Top Flight (Darius & Dante Martin), & Private Party (Marq Quen & Isiah Kassidy) & Matt Hardy
Man, this was fun. Top Flight & Private Party are just so quick in there. Darius moved a little too quick there and hit the back of his head on the mat. OUCHIES! He recovered well so that’s good. You can see the influence Matt is having on Private Party. They’ve become slightly more vicious and I like it. Matt is completely heel through and through now and he does it well. Can we talk about Darius’ standing Spanish Fly? My words! He may have the best one I’ve seen. JR, while he’s become significantly more adept than he was, can’t deal with matches like this and he didn’t even try. Excalibur basically took over and Schiavone chimed in meaningfully. Marq Quen is such an unusual worker. The little things he does are completely unique to him. The stall before the enzugiri kick were just bizarre and I liked all of it. The chair to the ribs from Isiah to Dante was quite unexpected. Love the way Marq looked at him not believing that Isiah did it…and then smiling at him like he approved. They have come around and all three are on the same page. You love to see it. Private Party even heeled it up at the end. I’m all for anything that elevates Private Party.
The Inner Circle (MJF, Wardlow, Santana Ortiz, Jake Hager & Sammy Guevara)
MJF the peacemaker. Yeah, okay. LOL! Sammy, as usual, was having none of it. Nicely done.
“Legit” Leyla Hirsch vs. Penelope Ford (w/ Kip Sabian, Miro & Charles Taylor)
Leyla is 4’11”. Just tiny. Penelope Ford has been nothing short of a train wreck in the ring since her debut in AEW. As such, I had no hopes for this match. Love that they forced Charles to trip Leyla. Thank goodness there was another story being told here. Penelope wasn’t awful here and the match was completely stolen from Leyla. I don’t really care that much about Leyla (typical AEW booking) but she is very solid in the ring for sure.
Kip hugging Chuck was high-larious. That meme-worthy shot tho. They’re doing this well and I’m waiting to see where it goes.
Good Brothers & Penta El Zero Miedo, Kenny Omega, & Don Callis
Fun little beat down. We’ll end up getting Mox in place of Penta in the three way coming soon.
MJF & Chris Jericho vs. Sammy Guevara & Jake Hager (Sammy Hager) vs. Proud and Powerful (Santana & Ortiz)
The mash-up of Jericho & MJF’s themes was really well done. This shout out from Sammy Hagar was a nice touch, though I’m not sure he even watches the show. Sammy Guevara is really impressive in there and always has been. He totally showed out here throughout the entire match. Really, this whole thing was just fun. A little odd timing between Santana & Guevara that I noticed but, again, not hurtful to the match. Guevara’s Spanish Fly off the top was just vicious too. Jericho tried to introduced “Floyd” and MJF tried to introduce the ring. Both paid courtesy of Hager. In the end, MJF got the dirty pin. There’s no way this issue is resolved…not at all. The best part is that Guevara will go on disliking MJF.
Fun episode of Dynamite! There was nothing bad. I love that nothing was resolved between the Inner Circle and next week’s fall-out from all this should be fun to see. Private Party’s evolution into a heel team is all kinds of exciting. I’m happy they’re finally doing something meaningful. They’ve been around since AEW premiered and I can’t wait to see where all of this goes.
