Royalty of the Ring: The Final – The New Day vs DIY

The final is… Well it’s finally here! So let’s recap. In Group A, The New Day took out The Street Profits and The Road Warriors in convincing fashion, while over in Group B, DIY battled their way past The Briscoe Brothers and The Brothers of Destruction.

New Day is in the final of the ROTR like I knew they would be. For my final match selection I’m going with a match that defines and embodies everything New Day is about. The match in question is The New Day (Xavier Woods/Big E) Vs The Good Brothers, Rusev/Nakamura, The Bar, The Usos & Daniel Bryan/Erik Rowan in a Gauntlet Match. The stipulation being that if Xavier and Big E could emerge victorious then their teammate/friend Kofi Kingston would earn a 1 on 1 world title opportunity at WrestleMania.

Not only is this match symbolic of arguably the most selfless stable onscreen but it also symbolizes the relationship of the 3 members off-screen too. Xavier Woods once stated in a shoot interview a few years prior that his #1 goal in WWE was to help Kofi Kingston become World Champion one day (here), and as I watched this gauntlet match play out on my screen when I viewed it for the first time that interview kept replaying in my head.

This match was a roller coaster of emotions, and in what [in my opinion] is one of the greatest moments in TV history came when The Bar attacked Xavier & Big E, putting Big E through a table, which seemingly ended New Day’s chances of continuing on with the Gauntlet Match. Things seemed bleak when the Usos (long time rivals of the New Day) entered the match, but in one of the greatest feel good wrestling moments in wrestling history The Usos voluntarily forfeited from the match rather than attack the fallen New Day out of mutual respect. This allowed Big E enough time to recover in time for their challenge of Daniel Bryan & Erick Rowan. It’s a moment that needs to be seen to truly appreciate the magnitude of it.

Here we are at the finals and boy has DIY had quite the run so far. DIY has taken care of some good teams and now they go up against their toughest task. I have no doubt they can beat the New Day, because the match I have chosen is the greatest tag match in NXT history. DIY has just proven time and time again why they are the most popular tag team in NXT history and they showed they had chemistry with any team that they shared the ring with.

Like I said, the match I chose is quite honestly the greatest tag match in NXT history. This match took place at TakeOver: Toronto and it was the 2 out of 3 falls match DIY had against the Revival for the NXT Tag Team Titles. This was DIY’s last chance at getting gold and they put on an instant classic with the Revival. This feud had everything you could have asked for and the match had all that and more. Storytelling? This match had that. Ring work? This match had that plus ten. Fans in the palm of their hands? They totally had that from the opening bell. The fans in attendance and everybody watching at home were on the edge of their seats because this match truly encapsulated everything we have grown to love about NXT. DIY would finally capture gold and the pop that came from the crowd in Toronto is still in the top 3 of all-time pops that has ever happened in NXT.

It is clear why you should pick DIY and this match, because it is everything you can ask for in tag team wrestling.

So there we have it, the two teams have spoken, who is going to join John Cena and Naomi as wrestling royalty? Make your vote count. Please vote based on what you’ve read and seen here. Let’s make this a fair tournament! (Poll ends Sunday April 4th, at 7pm ET).
