Grrrr Arg – Opinionated News – 5/11-5/17

It’s been another fairly slow week in wrestling news, but I’m me, so there’s always something interesting to write about.

While I was never a fan, I couldn’t, and wouldn’t, complete this without mentioning the passing of New Jack.  While he had many issues in his life, he entertained a lot of people.  Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and fans.  If you haven’t had a chance to see Paul Heyman’s tribute to New Jack, you should.  It’s quite touching.

When I first saw that WWE wanted to start regular shows with fans in attendance in July I was worried, but then the new CDC guidelines came out and I’m feeling more confident about it.  Would I be even more comfortable if the vaccine numbers were higher and if there was a vaccine for the under-12s, but things are kicking along at a decent pace.  I’m going to get onto my vaccine soapbox for a moment.  If you haven’t gotten it and don’t have a medical reason for not getting it, just do it!  It’s not a grand conspiracy theory, it’s not a tracking device, or any of the other claims people are making.  It’s time to get back to some semblance of normal, which WWE is trying to do, but we all need to do our own part to make the world a safer place.  Stepping down, won’t be climbing again.

It looks like Thea Trinidad, otherwise known as Zelina Vega (Aleister Black’s wife) will be returning to WWE.  Her amazing outfits alone are reason enough, but she really is a force to be reckoned with and should be working the ring as much as the mic when she returns.  She’s a beautiful, intelligent, talented woman and I hope she gets a solid push upon her return.  I’m giddy over this, as is most of the WR roster.

Phillip A. Thomas, Sonya Deville’s stalker, has been found unfit to stand trial and has been transferred to the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee, FL.  The protection order has been updated, and will again be reviewed in October.  It is very hard to be found unfit in this day and age.  Gone are the days of being able to fake your way out of standing trial for breaking the law.  If his condition changes to a point where they think he’s able, he will stand trial for what he did to Deville.

Two major championship changes this past week brought all the feels.  It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that the Mysterios would beat the Dirty Dawgs at Backlash, but it was still very sweet to see Dom and Rey actually win and celebrate together.  The pure joy on Dom’s face was a beautiful thing.  Then there’s Natalya and Tamina winning on SD.  Talking about the feels, Tamina’s face said it all.  She finally achieved gold in WWE, beyond the 24/7 Championship.  I’ve always hoped she’d achieve singles gold, but her struggles with family and injuries seem to have put that possibility on the back burner.  She greatly deserves this run, and while I wish she was with someone who was more able to go with the superstars of today, I understand why they went the direction they did.  I’m hoping this will lead to Natalya’s retirement from the ring because I believe she could do so much more as a trainer than in the ring, though it’s not my place to tell anyone it’s time to hang up their boots.  Anyway, I’m thrilled for Tamina and excited to see who she and Natalya face going forward.  I’m also interested in seeing where Nia and Shayna are going from here.  That could be a lot of fun as well.

To continue the feels for a tiny bit more.  I always loved Shawn Daivari.  He seems like an incredibly stand-up guy, and his brother Ariya appears to be the same.  Ariya’s Twitter comments this week were so touching, as was Rocky’s reply.  Ariya said he might not have gotten his mother everything, as the Rock has, but he got his mother a washer/dryer this week and is very proud of it.  Rock, always the nice guy, responded that he knew Ariya would get her everything she wants and the washer/dryer was a great start.  It was truly a touching guy moment between two in the industry who get it.

Lastly, I loved the zombies as a one-off.  I know I said as much in the Glow, but I wanted to mention it again after all the IWC angst we’ve seen on social media.
